Fill in the blanks

Tell me somethin', girl
Are you happy in this ............... world?
Or do you need more?
Is there somethin' else you're ................... for?
I'm falling
In all the good times I .............. myself
Longin' for change
And in the bad times I ................myself

Delete the word which you don't hear
Tell me something, boy
Aren't you tired of tryin' to fill that void?
Or do you need any more?
Ain't it hard keeping it so hardcore?
I'm falling down
In all of the good times I find myself
Longing for a change
And in the bad times I fear of myself
Correct the wrong word
I'm out the deep end, watch as I dive on
I'll never hit the ground
Crash through the surface, where they can't hide us
Where far from the shallow now

In the shallow, shallow
In the shallow, shallow

In the shallow, shallow
We're far…

Get rid of the song stuck in your head with chewing gum

The next time you have a song stuck in your head, reach for the chewing gum. The very act of grinding it around your mouth might be enough to kick that annoying earworm out of your brain, scientists have claimed.
Songs are less likely to re-appear in your head if you're chewing, according to a study at the University of Reading. People chewing gum are less likely to think about "sticky" songs, and less likely to hear them after they've stopped, the researchers found. The findings could even show that chewing gum could also be used to keep annoying or recurrent thoughts from popping into people's heads.
At least 90 per cent of people experience earworms, which comes from the German word "ohrwurm", and 15 per cent of people would call them disturbing, according to research.
"The majority of us experience them for only short periods - perhaps just a few minutes - but others can experience them for two or three days which can be extremely frustrating and debilitating," said Phil Beaman, from the university's school of psychology and clinical language sciences, who led the study. "We wanted to explore whether a simple act like chewing gum could help."
Participants in the study were played Play Hard by David Guetta and Payphone by Maroon 5. They were then told not to think about the songs, and hit a key whenever they did. The people who were doing so chewing gum hit the key a lot less than those that were told to do nothing or tap their finger, the research found.
"Interfering with our own 'inner speech' through a more sophisticated version of the gum-chewing approach may work more widely.," Beaman said. The study is the first to examine the effects of chewing gum on earworms, and it suggests it could also be used to stop other unwanted or intrusive thoughts. "However more research is needed to see whether this will help counter symptoms of obsessive-compulsive and similar disorders," Beaman said. In a previous study by University of Reading in 2009, it was found that almost any song can become an earworm.

Question 1 (2 points) Indicate whether the following statements are true or false and write down which part of the text justifies your answer.

a. People will definitely stop hearing the earworm after chewing gum.
b. Everyone who has been affected by earworms has said that they are a negative thing.
c. People who didn’t chew gum in the study were not allowed to move after they had heard the two songs.
d. This is the first time that the effect of chewing gum on earworms has been researched.

Bono reveals he always wears sunglasses because of glaucoma

Bono, the U2 frontman, has revealed that he wears dark glasses all the time because he suffers from glaucoma. The star said he has had the condition - a build-up of pressure in the eyeball, which can damage the optic nerve and lead to blindness if not treated - for around two decades.
Many had assumed his ever-present sunglasses - even indoors - were a rock star affectation, but he explained during a recording of the Graham Norton Show for BBC One that they are to help with his vision problem. Glaucoma can make the eyes more sensitive to light, causing sufferers to use dark glasses to alleviate difficulties.
Presenter Norton asked whether or not the singer ever removes his shades, to which Bono replied: "This is a good place to explain to people that I've had glaucoma for the last 20 years. I have good treatments and I am going to be fine." He added: "You're not going to get this out of your head now and you will be saying 'Ah, poor old blind Bono'."
The Irish band were on the show to promote their new album, Songs Of Innocence, which was released commercially this week after previously being given away to half a billion iTunes customers, a controversial move which upset some people who said they did not want it automatically added to their music libraries.
Speaking about the future, Bono told Norton: "We wanted to do something fresh but it seems some people don't believe in Father Christmas.”All those people who were uninterested in U2 are now mad at U2. As far as we are concerned, it's an improvement."
The album is expected to go into the top five this weekend, but will be the group's first album since Achtung Baby in 1991 which will not debut at number one in the UK chart.

Question 1 (2 points) Indicate whether the following statements are true or false and write down which part of the text justifies your answer.

Rita Hosking's seven-song EP Little Boat is a little gem of classy Americana.

Rita Hosking's seven-song EP Little Boat is a little gem of classy Americana.

I admit I warm to Rita Hosking because of the way a history teacher — for 12 years in David, California, where she used old songs as a source in lessons — took the brave decision to become a full-time musician and fulfil her potential. You can tell from her music that a literate and thoughtful songwriter is at work.
Her new mini-album, Little Boat, is more understated than Burn (one of the delights of 2011) yet the seven songs are rich and sparkle with class.

Hosking has a powerful, expressive voice, and she is clearly enjoying performing on what is in many ways a very personal album — her husband Sean Feder plays dobro and banjo, and her daughter Kora (who co-wrote a song) plays clawhammer banjo. Producer Rich Brotherton, at whose Austin, Texas studio Little Boat was recorded, features on guitar, bass and most everything else apart from the kitchen sink. The result is beautifully textured and harmonious Americana.

Burn was filled with high temperature anger at injustices and there is some of that in the song Five Star Location, about a town that has lost lots of its jobs to China. However, Clean, a song about the life of a student working as a maid, makes its points in shrewd and subtle ways. Blow Northwest Wind is an affecting track — and provides the album's title in the line 'man and his little boat, thinking 'bout what he's got to show'.
The opening track, Parting Glass, is also lovely, and in itself shows why Hosking deserves to be far better known.

Question 1. Indicate whether these sentences are true or false. Justify your answers with evidence from the text.
      a) The author admires Rita Hosking because she was brave.
      b) Rita Hosking has been a teacher for 12 years in David, California.
      c) “Little Boat” gets its name from the song “Blow Northwest Wind”
      d) The author thinks Rita is very famous.

Question 2. Answer the following questions in your own words.
a)       What does the author like about Rita Hosking?
b)       Why does the author think this is a personal album?

Question 3. Find a word or a phrase in the text that means the same as:
a)  wrath (par. 4)
b)  female servant (par. 4)
c)  astute, artful (par. 4)

Question 4. Rewrite the following sentences without changing the meaning.
a)       I had to go to school although I had a temperature
Despite ………………………………
b)       “Why don’t we eat out tomorrow?”, he said
He suggested …………………………….
c)       People say that he was a very good footballer
He ………………………………………………

Question 5. Write a short essay (120-150 words) on the following topic:
In your opinion, what makes a good album?

Shetland that moon-walks to Fleetwood Mac is an internet smash

An advert for mobile internet firm 3, which sees a pony tapping its hooves to Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac, has been lauded as 'the best thing ever' by fans on Twitter.

The clip has had more than two million YouTube hits in less than a week.

Mrs Williamson, 42, who runs the Benston stud farm on Shetland, said she was amazed at the five-year-old's new found fame.

Mrs Williamson was approached last year to supply the ponies for the advert, which was filmed on the cliffs of Eshaness on the islands. She said: 'The reaction has been incredible, we have had phone calls and emails from all over the world.’

'Socks just loves attention and I think that's why he was picked out to be the star.’  'It's gone viral now with millions of people watching him but he is blissfully unaware and is keeping his hoofs firmly on the ground.'

Socks was prepared for his starring role for two weeks by local animal trainer Elaine Tait, who told how she taught him to 'moonwalk' by giving him carrots as gifts.  She said: 'Since I only had two weeks in order to get Socks ready to moonwalk, I had to work quickly to gain his trust.’

One of Mrs Williamson's other ponies, Hugh, also starred on the advert.
However, she insisted that despite his fame she will not be selling Socks. She added: 'He has never been for sale and I won't be selling him no matter what the price.  'He's a very special little pony.'

Answer these questions in your own words.

Newsweek to End Its Print Edition

The world-famous current affairs magazine "Newsweek" has announced it will stop printing its publication at the end of the year and will become online-only. The magazine was established in 1933 and has been in print for the past 80 years. However, rising costs of publishing and a fall in the number of advertisers willing to buy space in newspapers and magazines mean a move to a digital version. The number of subscribers has also halved from its 2001 heyday of over 3 million to 1.5 million today. The transition has been in the works for a number of years. In 2010 Newsweek merged with the Internet news site "The Daily Beast" which has over 15 million visitors a month.

The switch to an online-only format is expected to revive Newsweek's fortunes. It was in serious trouble in 2010 when its revenue dropped nearly 40 per cent in two years. It was loaded with debt and its owner, The Washington Post Company, sold the company for just $1.00. The Daily Beast's editor Tina Brown now runs both publications. She said profit had to come before "the romance of print". She told reporters: "We must sustain the journalism that gives the magazine its purpose - and embrace the all-digital future. This decision is not about the quality of the brand or the journalism - that is as powerful as ever. It is about the challenging economics of print publishing and distribution."
