Are you a tourist or a New York resident?

A fun experiment was carried out in New York.  A group called Improv Everywhere painted lanes on the sidewalk.  Tourists, who usually walk slower had to use one lane and New York residents the other lane, because they usually walk very fast!
One of the Improv Everywhere representatives interviewed New Yorkers and visitors.
She received a wide variety of feedback. Many people thought it was hilarious. The most common complaint was that part of the fun of visiting New York is experiencing the hustle and bustle of the sidewalk as you walk amongst New Yorkers. Some were upset at the idea of the new lanes taking away from that experience.

Watch the video - would you like this to be painted on the pavements in your town?

The ice hotel that needs a fire alarm

The ICEHOTEL in Swedish Lapland has revealed it needs to install fire alarms to comply with local building regulations
It may sound like a far-fetched April Fool’s Day joke: the hotel constructed almost entirely of ice that requires fire alarms. But for a hotel rebuilt every winter in northern Sweden using only frozen water, it is absolutely true.
The ICEHOTEL, located in the small Arctic town of Jukkasjaervi, has announced that it would install fire alarms this year. It says it is following a request by the authorities to guarantee the safety of its guests. “We have to apply for building permits every year,” said Beatrice Karlsson, a spokeswoman for the hotel. “When the rules change, we need to adapt to the new rules obviously. We were a little surprised at first, but the reason is that there are things that can actually catch fire, like pillows, sleeping bags or reindeer skins. To us the most important concern is the safety of our clients, so we will comply," she added. “When we explain to people, I think it makes sense.”
The hotel will open from December 6 to April 13, with prices ranging from 1,900 kronor (£178) for a single room to 7,500 kronor (£850) for the most expensive suite. Tourists come from all over the world to sleep on an ice bed in temperatures as low as -8C (18 degrees Fahrenheit).
This year will be the ICEHOTEL’s 24th incarnation, and includes work from a range of designers from Sweden, Italy, the Netherlands, and Brazil. The alarms, which were installed and tested last winter with the local fire department, have made construction of the hotel, even more of a challenge. "The environment is humid, and ice and snow... move, so [that] had to be taken into account," Karlsson said.
As for the fire alarms, Karlsson said there had been “no incidents so far.” “It went off once, but when the supervisor came down it turned out it was just one of our guests who’d snuck off to the cleaning closet and had a cigarette.”

Travel disasters

John and David’s flight home from Amsterdam was at eight in the morning. John’s friend Pieter picked them up at their hostel in his car. They had agreed to meet at half past five but Pieter arrived almost half an hour late that, however, was just the beginning of their problems.
On the way from the hostel to the airport, a car broke down in the middle of a busy intersection, causing a traffic jam. Then, David realized that he had left his mobile phone in the hostel, but it was too late for them to turn back.
John and David didn’t know it, but Pieter was a horrible driver. When they got to the main highway, he was driving so slowly that John screamed at him, telling him to speed up. He then went so fast that David begged him to slow down.
When they arrived at the airport, Pieter dropped them off at the terminal, and they checked in, passed the security controls without being held up and got on the plane. Seconds later, the plane took off.
Eight hours later, they landed in New York, but they couldn’t get off the plane because there was a problem on the runway. Finally, forty-five minutes after landing, they got off.

The Empire State Building

The most famous building in a city famous for its buildings, to this day the ESB is a cherished symbol of New York held in high esteem by the city's millions of residents, and has become an icon to the world. This present state of grandeur has roots that run deep. The Empire State Building was begun amid unlikely circumstances. During the American depression of the early 20th century, most large construction projects were canceled. Jobs were hard to find, and workers were eager to earn their wage, so construction continued through weekends and holidays, allowing the building to be finished ahead of schedule. The depression also made building materials much cheaper. The building, itself, cost $24,718,000.00 -- about half of its original anticipated price.

The Empire State Building is 1,453 feet 8 and 9/16th inches tall from street level to its highest point -- a lightning rod. This is on top of the foundation which rests 55 feet below ground. From the lobby level it is possible to ascend to the 80th floor in just 45 seconds thanks to a system of 73 elevators. With all this technology and strength, it's important to note that the ESB didn't have air conditioning for its first few decades. The first air conditioning system was installed in 1950, and has been expanded several times. The Empire State Building is famous for the illumination of its upper floors, in 1964 the top 30 floors of the building were illuminated for the World's Fair. By 1976 the building's lighting scheme took a more artistic turn. In that year red, white, and blue lights celebrated the nation's bicentennial. Blue and white were used when the Yankees won baseball's World Series in 1977. The tradition has intensified and diversified. Sometimes the lights change on a daily basis to reflect current events and holidays. Orange for Halloween; green on Saint Patrick's Day. But in the spring and autumn, when birds migrate, the lights are turned off to keep from disturbing their route.

“Many buildings tout themselves as the "Eighth Wonder of the World." Only the Empire State Building says it in art.”, a spokesperson said.

Question 1 Indicate whether these sentences are true or false. Justify your answers with evidence from the text:

b) The existing air conditioning system is the same as the one installed in the 50s.
c) Sports events have affected the lights on the building.
d) The illumination is enviromentally friendly.

Question 2 Answer these questions in your own words:

a) How did the American depression affect the ESB construction?
b) What determines the lighting used on the ESB?

Question 3 Find a word or phrase in the text that means the same as:
a) appreciated (par.1)
b) willing (par.1)
c) device to prevent damage to the building from stormy weather (par.2)

Queen of the Sky

Next autumn the biggest passenger plane in the world - the Airbus A380 - is going to make its first public flight.

The plane is enormous - it's nearly 35 metres high and 75 metres long. To give you a better idea of its size, try imagining ten buses placed on top of each other for nearly an entire football field (a field measures 90 metres)! The wings on the Airbus are long enough to park 70 cars on! There are also 500 kilometres of cables.

When it is full, the Airbus will carry 853 passengers - that's over 300 more than today's jumbo jets. Inside the plane there's going to be lots of space for people to relax and travel in comfort. There are also going to be cinemas, bars, shops, and even a gym with showers!

The new super-plane has Rolls Royce engines, which are very quiet, so it isn't going to cause as much noise pollution as ordinary planes.

The Airbus A380 is going to take holidaymakers between London Heathrow and Changi airport in Singapore.

Amazing rescue – Thanks to mobile phone!

Two teenagers capsized in the sea off the south coast of England and called Japan on a mobile phone to ask for help. That was when brother and sister Ken and Emily Booth were on a sailing holiday near Southampton. But because of huge waves their small boat capsized and they were thrown into the sea.

Ken, 17, and Emily, 16, spent 30 minutes trying to right the capsized dinghy, but without success. They couldn’t get back into the dinghy, and they couldn’t attract the attention of passing ships. After they had been in the water for about 40 minutes, the situation was getting serious, and they felt very cold. Then Emily remembered her mobile phone in its watertight container in her pocket and reached for it.

But she didn’t think of dialling 999, the emergency number. Instead she phoned their father, who was 6,000 miles away in Tokyo on a business trip. Emily explained: ‘I thought it would be quicker to phone someone I knew and tell them our position. I dialled Dad’s number and contacted the coastguard.’

About ten minutes later, after they had held on to the dinghy for nearly an hour, they heard a helicopter. Next, everything happened very quickly, and ken and Emily were picked up and carried to safety.
