Cycles for Cigarettes: City Gives Bikes to Children if a Relative Quits

Standing on the street in the centre of Kilis, a small Turkish city on the border with Syria, a steady stream of noisy motorcycles, scooters and cars zoom past. It’s certainly not the most bicycle-friendly city, but local leaders are determined to change that with a new network of cycle lanes, and by giving away thousands of bikes to local children.

Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war seven years ago, millions of Syrians have sought shelter in  Turkey. While there are refugee camps lining the border, most refugees opt to live in cities such as Kilis. The population of Syrian refugees now exceeds the number of locals here and Arabic is heard as much as Turkish. Many shops and restaurants are emblazoned with Arabic signs.

The mayor, Hasan Kara, wants Kilis to be viewed as a place that has graciously opened its doors to refugees. As part of that, Kara has embarked on a series of civic and infrastructure projects aimed at creating a liveable environment. Perhaps the most unusual is a scheme to give thousands of free bicycles to the city’s children. “So far, we have distributed more than 4,000 bicycles, and our target is to give out at least 15,000,” Kara explains as we talk in his office in a restored historical building near the centre.

On the streets nearby, motorcycles and scooters zoom past in every direction; some carry entire families of three and four, and it is rare to see a helmet. “We placed importance on the bicycle project because as you can see, the usage of motorcycles is very common,” he says. “Now, we’re seeing children coming to and from school on their bicycles.” To get a bike, children must meet three requirements: they must get a smoker relative to quit, maintain strong grades while improving a weak area of study, and promise to ride for an hour a day.

In addition to the bikes for kids scheme, Kilis has built a four-mile cycle lane close to the city centre, near rows of modern apartment buildings. The mayor aims to build a 20-mile network of bike lanes throughout the city, including one along its main shopping street, in an attempt to break the dominance of cars and motorcycles. Initial funds for the cycle project came from the city and Turkey’s Ministry of Health but there is not enough to complete the project, so Kara is calling on the European Union for help.

No One Seems to Care how Dangerous CrossFit Is

Carolyn Nagler has witnessed a lot of accidents in her year attending CrossFit classes. Her own most painful experience happened six months after first wandering into a class, when she cut her legs in missing her target during a “box jump”. Still, that hasn’t stopped the 45-year-old from returning to her local gym in Astoria, Queens, up to five times a week. “I was bleeding all over, but I got up and kept going,” she says. “If I hadn’t, I would never be able to do a box jump now.”

New Yorkers are always seeking new, extreme methods for staying fit, and high-intensity interval-training (HIIT) workouts such as those at CrossFit — in which participants complete physically demanding repetitions— have unique appeal to New Yorkers’ need for both competition and novelty. With these extreme workouts, however, come injuries. “I do think there is a sort of race between gyms to find the next new thing,” says Jordan Metzl, a specialist sports doctor who also teaches an HIIT class. He says he’s seen a 30 percent increase in HIIT- related injuries at the hospital over the past two years. “It can kill you,” CrossFit co-founder Greg Glassman even told the New York Times in 2005. “I’ve always been completely honest about that.”

Noel Lozares, an orthopedic and sports physical therapist who often works with Olympic athletes, says it’s easy for workout enthusiasts to get carried away. He recommends that people interested in HIIT should already be active — whether it’s running, yoga or pilates — three days a week. “You always want to consult the instructor,” he says. “So many people who have never done any kind of exercise before get into these classes, and that’s when injuries happen.”

The most common athletic ailments include muscle strains, particularly in the lower back; knee and shoulder injuries; and tendon issues. Still, doctors believe strength training is an important part of any athlete’s workouts — and can make other kinds of exercise, like running, easier and more productive. Before a session, Metzl recommends doing what he calls a “dynamic warm-up” to get muscles and joints moving. Another important part of staying fit and healthy is allowing the body time to recover, says Lozares. “I am working with athletes who are members of the US Olympic team — none of them do HIIT every day.”

Why Young People don’t Watch TV the Old Way.

Since rising to prominence in the 1950s, television has become a universal experience for people of all ages. And until recently, due to lack of variety, everyone watched the same programmes most of the time. The top-rated non-sporting event in American history was the M*A*S*H finale, viewed by 105.9 million Americans. That was nearly half the U.S. population in 1983. But the days of the family gathered around the TV set and watching their favourite show together are now long gone.

Many young people no longer have cable and it’s become more and more common to hear people say they “don’t even have a TV.” Both of these statements may be true, but it doesn’t mean young people are consuming less visual entertainment. It just means they’re watching less live television on traditional television screens. People aged 25-34 watch less than half as much live TV as those aged 50-64, but they’ve just turned their attention to other screens and different times.

Streaming services like Netflix are largely responsible. Thanks to its cheap monthly subscription that can be shared between multiple users, I know exactly zero people my age who do not have access to Netflix. Its success can be attributed to a number of factors, most notably its ease of use – you can connect to Netflix via your phone, computer, Smart TV, a gaming console, or nearly anything with an internet connection. Many traditional networks now even post their shows online, for free – accessible for anyone who wants to watch.

Access to whichever show you want, whenever you want, has made television a more solitary experience. We can now watch a sporting event or our favourite show on a tablet or a phone. The top rated shows on television remain on networks like CBS and NBC, but the median age of viewers is creeping towards 60.

What lies ahead is even more confusing. Today’s kids are even more adverse to traditional TV; entire careers are now made off producing daily or weekly YouTube videos. One particular YouTube personality, Logan Paul, has 17 million subscribers and posts a new video daily. But all in all consumers both young and old benefit. An increasingly competitive marketplace provides us with hundreds of shows to choose from and watch however we like. It’s a golden age for television, even if we don’t call it television anymore.

Is Owning a Dog Good for Your Health?

Dogs really are our best friends, according to a Swedish study that says canine ownership could reduce heart disease. A study of 3.4 million people between the ages of 40 and 80 found that having a dog was associated with a 23 % reduction in death from heart disease and a 20 % lower risk of dying from any cause over the 12 years of the study. Previous studies have suggested dogs relieve social isolation and depression – both linked to an increased risk of heart disease and early death.

Dog owners show better responses to stress (their blood pressure and pulse rates don’t soar), have higher levels of physical activity and slightly lower cholesterol levels. The American Heart Association released a statement in 2013 saying that owning a dog “was probably” associated with a reduced risk of heart disease. Their reluctance to more strongly endorse dog ownership is because most previous studies are what is called observational – researchers note an association, but can’t prove causation. This means that other factors might explain why dog owners are healthier than, say, goldfish owners – for example, perhaps only people who are fit in the first place purchase pets that need daily walkies.

This latest study found the biggest positive impact of having a dog was on people living alone. “It seems  that a dog can be a substitute for living with other people in terms of reducing the risk of dying,” says Tove Fall, an epidemiologist and the lead author of the study. “Dogs encourage you to walk, they provide social support and they make life more meaningful. If you have a dog, you interact more with other people. If you do get ill and go into hospital and you have a dog, there’s a huge motivation to try to get back home.”

Of course, getting a dog and watching it from your sofa while you eat fatty food is not going to reduce your risk of heart disease. And a toy dog may look cute, but won’t have any effect either. Fall’s study showed the most health benefits came from having retrievers or pointers. Until her German shorthaired pointer died last year, she ran 10km with her most days. “In Sweden, we have one of the lowest rates of dog ownership in Europe,” says Fall, who has recently got a new puppy. “Maybe this will increase the acceptance that dogs are important to people.”

All new cars in the EU could have speed limiters and breathalyzers as of 2022

     The European Union has agreed on new rules stating that all cars built after May 2022 and sold in the European Union will have built-in speed limiters, as well as breathalyzers that won't allow driving if the driver is intoxicated. The European Parliament is expected to ratify the new regulations in September. The UK, which may not be part of the European Union by then, will nevertheless adopt the new rules as well. 

     The list of new mandatory safety features for cars is actually much longer, and includes some increasingly common features like lane-keeping assistance, advanced emergency braking, a built-in data recorder, drowsiness and distraction monitoring, and camera/sensors help when reversing. 

      "With the new advanced safety features that will become mandatory, we can have the same kind of impact as when the safety belts were first introduced. Many of the new features already exist, in particular in high–end vehicles. Now we raise the safety level across the board, and pave the way for connected and automated mobility of the future. But the features that will likely get the most attention are "alcohol interlock installation facilitation" and "intelligent speed assistance." The former typically requires the driver to blow into an in-car breathalyzer before starting the car. If the driver's alcohol level is too high, the car simply won't start. The details of the system that will be mandatory in EU cars are scarce at this point. The latter feature uses GPS as well as a built-in sign recognition system to detect if the car is going over the speed limit. Then the system will warn the driver and automatically slow down the car. However, the driver will be able to override this by pushing on the accelerator pedal.

Mum sits next to son during maths class to teach him a lesson about behaviour

     A mother has been hailed a hero after she gatecrashed her son’s class to get him to behave. Becky Crandley walked into Sittingbourne Community College in Kent as part of a ‘surprise’ experiment on Friday. She was reacting to reports that her son, Harley, 12, had shown signs of a bad attitude. Becky had warned him that unless he improves his behaviour she would be going to school with him but said little changed. 

So when school returned recently she stuck to her word and when she got emails from the year eight pupil’s teacher about two incidents she triggered Operation Mummy Bear. Becky said: ‘It all started last year with his behaviour change, it’s part of growing up I think, but it’s his rudeness and disrespect I cannot stand. ‘I have had phone call after phone call about his behaviour. He’s had an untold amount of detentions and isolations but nothing seemed to bother him. She had told the school of her plan and they accepted so at 2pm on Friday she went to the school. 

Becky, who has another four children, said: ‘I constantly threatened that I’d sit with him in school if needed, and he always laughed it off. ‘Since they’ve been back this year I’ve had several phone calls already. So when his maths teacher emailed last week and said about an incident, I said to her I would join him. ‘He didn’t have a clue, and he was very embarrassed for sure, I was introduced as his mum.’ 

Speaking about the motive for her actions, Becky said it was necessary as ‘today’s children are getting worse by the second. ‘I think more parents need to act upon their children’s behaviour. It’s scary to think what we will leave behind one day.’ Becky added: ‘Most people know I’m a big softy when it comes to my kids but I’m also straight up and try my hardest to teach them the right way in life. ‘One thing I will not tolerate is disrespect from my sons towards any woman and my eldest has been rude recently in secondary school towards his female teachers. ‘His mummy bear has had enough for sure, my foot is down and I will not lose.

‘If only I got a picture of his face when I walked in and sat down next to him, he went so red there’s nothing I can compare it to.’
