Queen Elizabeth Gracefully Declines 'Oldie' Award with Brilliant Response

Queen Elizabeth may be 95, but she isn’t ready to accept an “Oldie” quite yet.

The queen gracefully declined Oldie magazine’s “The Oldie of the Year” award through a letter written by her assistant private secretary, Tom Laing-Baker, and shared on the publication’s Twitter account Tuesday.

The humorous award and annual awards show (also known as TOOTY) celebrates older people who have made a significant contribution to public life.

In the letter, addressed to entertainer and awards chair Gyles Brandreth, Laing-Baker praised the awards and explained why the queen doesn’t quite fit “the relevant criteria.”

“Dear Mr Brandreth, thank you for your letter of 30th July, addressed to Sir Edward Young, asking if The Queen would accept The Oldie of the Year award,” said the note, dated Aug. 21.

“Her Majesty believes you are as old as you feel, as such The Queen does not believe she meets the relevant criteria to be able to accept, and hopes you will find a more worthy recipient,” the letter continued. “This message comes to you with Her Majesty’s warmest best wishes.”

The queen’s response is the perfect fit for Oldie magazine, which is intended as “a free-thinking, funny magazine” and “a light-hearted alternative to a press obsessed with youth and celebrity,” according to editor Harry Mount.

Despite the royals’ reluctance to accept their Oldies, the queen’s daughter-in-law, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, attended the magazine’s awards on Tuesday.

Isle of Man Viking jewellery found by metal detectorist

A "stunning" collection of 1,000-year-old gold and silver Viking jewellery has been discovered on the Isle of Man by a metal detectorist. Retired police officer Kath Giles made the find on farm land in the north of the island.

The horde includes a gold arm ring and a "massive" silver brooch dating back to 950 AD.

It was unearthed in December but has been revealed for the first time during a coroner's hearing. Manx National Heritage's curator of archaeology Allison Fox said the arm ring in particular was a "rare find".

Ms Giles said she immediately knew she had found "something very special" and was "thrilled" at the discovery, which is likely to be worth several thousand pounds. "I knew straight away that it was a significant and exciting find.

The findings were declared treasure in an inquest at Douglas Courthouse. Discoveries of archaeological interest on the island must be reported to Manx National Heritage within two weeks. If items are legally classified as treasure, they belong to the crown and the finder is rewarded.

Precisely how much this latest finding is worth has not been determined, but similar items of Viking jewellery have been valued at £1,500 each. A larger horde of Viking treasure found in Lancashire in 2011 was valued at £110,000.

Ms Fox said the gold arm band was rare because silver was a far more common commodity for trading during the Viking era. "The arm ring, brooch and cut armband are all high-status personal ornaments and represent a large amount of accumulated wealth," she said. "Finding just one of these items would be of significance. The fact that all were found together suggests that whoever buried them was extremely wealthy and probably felt immediately and acutely threatened."

Question 1: Indicate whether the following statements are TRUE OR FALSE and write down the sentence or the part of the text that justifies your answer.

1. The jewellery was first shown to the public in December.

2. The person who discovers a treasure cannot keep it but gets some money in exchange.

3. It is the first time that Viking jewels have been found.

4. The person who hid the jewels was afraid to lose them.

Question 2: Answer the following questions in your own words according to the text.

1. What was Ms Giles' attitude when she found the jewels?

2. What is the experts' opinion about the discovery?

Question 3: Find words or phrases in the text that correspond to the words and definitions given.

1. awesome (p.1)

2. uncover (p.2)

3. custodian (p.2)

4. pay back (p.4)

Why International Women's Day Is Celebrated on March 8?

BY SELENA BARRIENTOS AND HANNAH JEON Mar 4, 2020

Celebrated on March 8 every year, International Women's Day is a day dedicated to honoring the achievements of women throughout history and all across the globe, and is typically a day for women from all different backgrounds and cultures to band together to fight for gender parity and women's rights. International Women’s Day (IWD) is dedicated to celebrating women’s achievements in the social, economic, cultural, and political spheres. The day, collectively founded by women, also brings attention to gender parity and women's rights.

Gender parity is a statistical measure that compares women and men through their income, education, and work hours, among other points. This sociological metric helps researchers understand how society is progressing or regressing in specific areas. It’s also an important tool for policymakers striving towards gender equality. Of course, the global celebration of International Women’s Day is a time for reflection of how far women have come, advocacy for what is still needed, and action to continue breaking down barriers. With over a century of history, IWD is a growing movement centered around unity and strength.

International Women’s Day has a rich history dating back 108 years — the first glimpse of it was in 1909 when the Socialist Party of America celebrated 15,000 women who protested long work hours, low pay, and the lack of voting rights in New York City. Originally called National Woman’s Day, the monumental annual celebration spread across the world (officially celebrated in 1911), but it was Russia who unknowingly set the March 8 trend.

Although International Women’s Day became an official holiday in Russia in 1913, women still experienced difficulties caused by WWI. While men were off at war, women dealt with food shortages and a government who wouldn’t listen to them. On March 8, 1917 (February 23 in the former Russian calendar), tens of thousands of Russian women took to the streets demanding change. The unified cry for help paved the way for Russian women to be granted voting rights soon after.

International Women's Day is an official holiday in at least 20 countries, including: Afghanistan, Cuba, Laos, Russia, and Vietnam. In many of these countries, tradition holds that men honor their mothers, wives, girlfriends, and colleagues with flowers and small presents. In other nations, the day is much like the holiday of Mother's Day, in which children give gifts to their mothers and grandmothers. In other countries, however, like Nepal and China, IWD is a holiday only for women.

There are many ways you can participate in the celebration for International Women's Day, including joining in on the numerous events that will be held worldwide. These special events will span from global gatherings and informative conferences to powerful art exhibitions and festivals, and will be held by women's networks, charities, political parties, corporations, and other communities. You can easily search for an IWD event happening near you before the big day in this website:  https://www.internationalwomensday.com/EventSearch.

Even if you can't attend an IWD event, though, you can still join millions of participants by wearing purple on March 8. Signifying justice and dignity, the color purple has become an international symbol for women since the origination of purple, green, and white as a symbol of women's equality from the Women's Social and Political Union in the UK in 1908.

Dramatic discovery links Stonehenge to its original site – in Wales

Listen to the extract from the video and answer the questions below

Dramatic discovery links Stonehenge to its original site – in Wales

Fri 12 Feb 2021

An ancient myth about Stonehenge, first recorded 900 years ago, tells of the wizard Merlin leading men to Ireland to capture a magical stone circle called the Giants’ Dance and rebuilding it in England as a memorial to the dead.

Geoffrey of Monmouth’s account had been dismissed, partly because he was wrong on other historical facts, although the bluestones of the monument came from a region of Wales that was considered Irish territory in his day.

Now a vast stone circle created by our Neolithic ancestors has been discovered in Wales with features suggesting that the 12th-century legend may not be complete fantasy. Its diameter of 110 metres is identical to the ditch that encloses Stonehenge and it is aligned on the midsummer solstice sunrise, just like the Wiltshire monument.

A series of buried stone-holes that follow the circle’s outline has been unearthed, with shapes that can be linked to Stonehenge’s bluestone pillars. One of them bears an imprint in its base that matches the unusual cross-section of a Stonehenge bluestone “like a key in a lock”, the archaeologists discovered.

Mike Parker Pearson, a professor of British later prehistory at University College London, told the Guardian: “I’ve been researching Stonehenge for 20 years now and this really is the most exciting thing we’ve ever found.”

The evidence backs a century-old theory that the nation’s greatest prehistoric monument was built in Wales and venerated for hundreds of years before being dismantled and dragged to Wiltshire, where it was resurrected as a second-hand monument.

A century ago the geologist Herbert Thomas established that the bluestones at Stonehenge originated in the Preseli hills. The newly discovered circle is virtually a stone’s throw (3 miles) from Preseli, being dragged more than 140 miles to Salisbury Plain some 5,000 years ago.

Question 1: [2 POINTS] Indicate whether the following statements are TRUE or FALSE and write down the sentences or part of the text that justifies your answer. No points will be given if the evidence is not correct.

WATER ON THE MOON

Having dropped tantalizing hints days ago about an "exciting new discovery about the Moon", the US space agency has revealed conclusive evidence of water on our only natural satellite.

This "unambiguous detection of molecular water" will boost Nasa's hopes of establishing a lunar base. The aim is to sustain that base by tapping into the Moon's natural resources. Unlike previous detections of water in permanently shadowed parts of lunar craters, scientists have now detected the molecule in sunlit regions of the Moon's surface.

Speaking during a virtual teleconference, co-author Casey Honniball, postdoctoral fellow at Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, said: "The amount of water is roughly equivalent to a 12-ounce bottle of water in a cubic metre of lunar soil."

Her Nasa colleague Jacob Bleacher, said researchers still needed to understand the nature of the watery deposits. This would help them determine how accessible they would be for future lunar explorers to use. And while there have previously been signs of water on the lunar surface, these new discoveries suggest it is more abundant than previously thought. "It gives us more options for potential water sources on the Moon," said Hannah Sargeant "Where to put a Moon base is largely focused on where the water is."

The US space agency has said it will send the first woman and next man to the lunar surface in 2024  to prepare for the "next giant leap" - human exploration of Mars as early as the 2030s. Dr Sargeant explained that this meant developing "a more sustainable way of doing space exploration. Part of that is using these local resources - especially water," she told BBC News.

Disney moves ‘Black Widow’ and more big titles to 2021 amid coronavirus concerns

Walt Disney Co. has delayed the release of its highly anticipated Marvel Studios film “Black Widow”, the Russian spy, which is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, until next year, amid concerns about the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on moviegoing.

Disney also pushed back the launches for a host of other movies, including Kenneth Branagh’s “Death on the Nile,” Marvel’s “Eternals,” the Ben Affleck thriller “Deep Water” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story.” Of those titles only “Death on the Nile” is still scheduled to open this year, moving from October to Dec. 18. The lower-profile thriller “The Empty Man” actually moves up from a planned December opening to the Oct. 23 date vacated by “Nile.”

In the U.S., about half of the moviegoing public is not ready to return to movie theaters right away, according to data firm NRG.

“Black Widow’s” retreat marks the latest major shuffle on Hollywood’s release calendar. Disney’s decision was not surprising. Theaters remain closed in the two biggest U.S. markets, New York and Los Angeles. A rise in coronavirus cases in Europe has also given studios pause, and Latin America, another major region for Disney movies, remains hobbled by the pandemic.

One of the main stars tweeted: “Marvel made the right & responsible decision. There's a pandemic. Nothing is more important than health and lives. I can't tell people to go to a movie theater until I feel safe going to one, take care of yourselves. I promise it'll be worth the wait!"
